A native of New Orleans, Louisiana. Dr. Small has lived and worked in the Los Angeles area since 1994. He has established a reputation as an expert in his field through his research and practice during the past decade, most recently as Professor of Ophthalmology at the Jules Stein Eye Institute at UCLA.

Dr. Small received his medical degree from Tulane University in Louisiana and went on for a residency in ophthalmology and a fellowship in vitreoretinal surgery at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina.

Dr. Small's are of research has focused on molecular genetics and inherited eye diseases. His research has been supported by grants from the National Institutes of Health, The Retinitis Pigmentosa Foundation, the Foundation Fighting Blindness and the Jules and Doris Stein Research to Prevent Blindness Professorship where Dr. Small served as principal investigator.

Among the many recent awards Dr. Small has received are the Honor Award of the American Academy of Ophthalmology (1998) and being named tot he Best Doctors in America, Pacific Region and Los Angeles.

Dr. Small and his wife Frances have two daughters, both in college. As a family, they have participated in medical missionary work overseas and through their church. Dr. Small also enjoys swimming with the UCLA Masters swim team.
